Peri-menopause as a Second Puberty: A Rite of Passage

Peri-menopause, often likened to a second puberty, is a profound transition in a woman's life. This phase, which precedes menopause, typically begins in a woman's 40s but can start earlier. It is marked by fluctuating hormone levels, leading to a variety of physical and emotional changes. Understanding peri-menopause as a rite of passage allows us to see it not merely as a biological process but as an opportunity for profound personal transformation.

Shedding Old Patterns and Mental Programming

During peri-menopause, women experience significant hormonal shifts, primarily in estrogen and progesterone. These changes can cause mood swings, anxiety, and depression, prompting a deep introspection. This introspection can act as a catalyst for shedding old patterns and mental programming that no longer serve. Just as puberty transforms a girl into a woman, peri-menopause invites a woman to reevaluate her life, relationships, and values, shedding outdated beliefs and behaviours.

Healing Trauma

The emotional turbulence of peri-menopause can bring unresolved trauma to the surface. This period offers a unique opportunity for healing. As women become more attuned to their emotional states, they can address and heal past traumas. Engaging in practices such as therapy, journaling, and mindfulness can support this healing process. By confronting and processing these buried emotions, women can free themselves from the lingering effects of trauma, leading to greater emotional resilience and well-being.

Rebirth into the Wise Woman

Peri-menopause signifies not just an end but a beginning—a rebirth into the wise woman. This stage of life is often associated with increased self-awareness, confidence, and wisdom. As women navigate the physical and emotional changes, they emerge with a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. This wisdom is born from the trials and transformations of peri-menopause, allowing women to step into their power with grace and strength.

The Role of Mantra in Transition

Mantra is a great tool for supporting the sometimes tricky waters of transitioning through menopause. I can honestly say it has been Kirtan and Mantra that have gotten me through this emotional, hormonal rollercoaster and saved me from my darkest times of depression and suicidal ideation. It has given me an anchor, a way to get out of the turmoil of my mind and get back into my heart. It has been a way to dissolve and move stuck energy out of my body. It has been a guiding light.

The Path of Bhakti Yoga

The path of Bhakti Yoga is a recipe for a delicious, nourishing life. Through devotion, singing, and chanting, it offers a profound means of connecting to the divine and to one's own inner self. This practice can provide immense support and healing during the challenging transition of peri-menopause, helping women to embrace this rite of passage with grace and strength.

I truly feel that the menopause process is calling us towards our spiritual path and not only are we going through physical transformations but we are going through a spiritual one also and this is why mantra and peri-menopause can be such a beautiful path to take.

Lots of Love Vanessa xx
