Trauma and the Soul

Liberating the Soul: How Processing Trauma Through the Body and Yogic Mind Mastery Can Free You from the Thinking Mind

In our modern world, the mind often runs the show, spinning narratives, clinging to identities, and dictating how we perceive reality. For many, this creates a sense of entrapment—a loop of anxiety, fear, and disconnection that leaves little room for peace, presence, and true self-awareness. However, there is a path to liberation: one that involves healing trauma stored in the body and mastering the mind through yogic practices to create enough space for the soul to break free from identification with the thinking mind.

The Mind-Body Connection: Understanding Trauma

Trauma is not just a psychological wound; it is a deeply somatic experience. When we go through overwhelming events, the body stores the emotional charge that we were unable to process in the moment. This stored energy can manifest in a myriad of ways—chronic tension, emotional numbness, anxiety, or even physical illness. The mind, then, attempts to make sense of this unprocessed trauma by creating stories, beliefs, and identities that form the basis of our perceived reality.

These identities—whether they stem from past trauma, childhood conditioning, or societal expectations—are often false constructs. They become layers of the ego, defining who we think we are and how we move through the world. Over time, we lose touch with our true essence, the soul, as we identify more and more with these limiting stories of the mind.

The key to freeing ourselves from this illusion is not to simply change our thoughts, but to release the deep-seated trauma stored in the body and cultivate a mind that can stay present in the here and now.

Processing Trauma Somatically: Releasing the Body's Burden

Healing trauma somatically means addressing the body’s role in storing and processing emotional pain. Rather than re-living traumatic experiences in the mind, somatic healing focuses on bringing awareness to the sensations within the body and gently releasing the stuck energy.

This can be done through practices such as breathwork, movement, body scanning, and trauma-informed yoga. In these practices, we bring the mind’s attention to the body and notice the areas where tension, pain, or contraction exists. As we breathe into these sensations and allow them to be felt, the body begins to release what it has held onto for so long.

The process can feel subtle, yet its effects are profound. As we let go of trauma physically, we create more space within our being—space that was once occupied by unresolved emotions and stored stress. This space allows us to come into deeper contact with the present moment, untangling us from the emotional loops of the past.

Yogic Mind Mastery: Becoming Present and Still

While somatic processing helps us release trauma from the body, yogic mind mastery is what enables us to break free from the relentless grip of the thinking mind.

The thinking mind—always analyzing, planning, and worrying—is driven by ego. It perpetuates the illusion of separation and the idea that we are our thoughts, stories, and identities. This false identification creates suffering because the mind is never truly satisfied; it’s always chasing the next thing, or ruminating on the past.

Yogic practices like meditation, pranayama (breath control), and mindfulness are tools for mastering the mind. These practices allow us to observe the thoughts without getting caught in them. We begin to see that thoughts are not who we are; they are just passing clouds in the sky of consciousness.

As we deepen in yogic mind mastery, the chatter of the mind quiets, and a profound stillness arises. This stillness is the space where the soul can emerge, liberated from the ego’s grip. When we rest in this stillness, we come face-to-face with our true nature—the soul’s essence, which is boundless, peaceful, and untouched by the dramas of the mind.

Liberation from Identification with the Thinking Mind

By processing trauma through the body and mastering the mind through yogic practices, we begin to see through the illusion that we are our thoughts, emotions, or past experiences. The more we release from the body, the more space we create in the mind for presence. And in that spaciousness, the soul can finally step forward.

The soul doesn’t operate from the mind’s narratives of "I am not enough" or "I need to be this or that." The soul simply is. It exists in a state of pure being, connected to the divine, and free from the limitations of ego-based thinking.

Liberating the soul from identification with the thinking mind is a journey of remembrance. As we clear away the stored trauma and bring the mind into stillness, we remember that our true identity is not found in fleeting thoughts or emotions, but in the eternal presence that lives within us.
